Cologne founder rooms in North Rhine-Westphalia
Cologne holds together as a third pole if you count rooms. Haus lists 20 communities there, behind only Berlin (54), Munich (24), and Hamburg (21). North Rhine-Westphalia holds 78 communities at state level, which is more than Berlin’s city total. The city itself has just two program listings. People come for cadence: university nights, an insurance collaboration track, and a student club that actually meets.
How Cologne sits in the state
Founders who only watch Berlin can miss how dense the west already is. State-level maps have been saying this for years: NRW rivals Berlin when you count the whole Land. On Haus the community count is the clearest signal. Twenty rooms sit in Cologne, and DĂĽsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Aachen, and Bonn sit in the same state pile. If your buyer, lab, or first ten hires are already on the Rhine, staying is a practical choice.
The program directory is thin on purpose. Haus has two Cologne programs: InsurLab Germany and JUNIOR, a school-year mini-company format from IW JUNIOR. Founders looking for a six-month stipend will feel under-served. That thinness is a filter on what the city currently publishes. The live product here is community plus one sharp industry track.
University nights and student clubs
Gateway Connect is the University of Cologne / TH Köln / German Sport University / RFH / CBS network: events, mentoring, Talent-Connection, and a monthly-ish Startup Jour Fix if you are already in the Gateway orbit. The related Gateway Incubator sits on the university site rather than as a Haus program card. It is four months of workshops plus coaching, 5-8 hours a week, with the next batch in October 2026 and applications from 3 August 2026. You need an affiliation with a Gateway Hochschule. That is a real calendar, and you should treat the dates as firm.
Entrepreneurs Club Cologne is the student Verein, with GrĂĽnderabend, Pitch Night, and RHIVE. The homepage is louder than it is precise: animated counters, no published equity, and no cohort terms. The useful test is the next date on the calendar. Cologne Startup Founder 101 and the AI meetups are thinner still, and they live on Meetup pages. Go twice and see whether the same twelve people show up with half-built problems. If they do, it is worth a third visit.
One industry track and the specialist rooms
InsurLab Germany’s Collaborator is the live startup product: six months, a use case with at least one member insurer, a kickoff in Cologne, and a pitch slot at insureNXT. The official page does not publish a stipend or an equity take. It also does not describe itself as a generalist accelerator. You need a product German insurers might buy, which is a higher bar than adding AI to claims on slide 4.
BioCampus Cologne and RTZ are the HealthTech geography: a campus and desks. Digital Hub Cologne is on the Haus community list; the official site returned an error when we opened it, so we do not quote terms from memory. Flintania, Womans Business Club Cologne, Women in AI Cologne, and Migrafrica are the identity rooms. They matter when they have a next meeting. Check the calendar before you treat a directory logo as a weekly habit.
