Leipzig and Dresden founder programs
Sit in Leipzig or Dresden if your work is tied to a university lab, a medtech bench, or a Saxony industry buyer. Haus currently lists 8 programs and 9 communities in Leipzig, and 4 programs and 5 communities in Dresden. That is a usable map. SpinLab, SMILE, medical:forge, and dresden|exists publish terms, hours, or filing help you can act on. The rooms that matter have a reason to stay after the train back to the Hauptbahnhof.
Leipzig programs with published terms
SpinLab, the HHL accelerator in the Baumwollspinnerei, is unusually blunt on its own site. It takes no equity, no shares, and no fees. Accepted teams get 24/7 office access and up to €50,000 in program funding. SMILE, the University of Leipzig founding initiative, is the quieter door: individual coaching plus help filing EXIST, the SAB Technologiegründungsstipendium, or Sachsen’s InnoStartBonus. medical:forge at BioCity is the specialist exception. Official terms are a 12-month medtech track, an in-kind package they value at €192,600, and €21,400 of your own capital. That is a paid infrastructure year, with wet lab, electronics workshop, and MDR coaching on the page. If you need those things, it is one of the few East listings that looks like a bench you can book. If you do not, the capital contribution is a reason to keep walking.
Dresden transfer offices and clubs
dresden|exists is the startup service of the city’s universities and research institutes. Their public numbers are 25 years, 3,500 accompanied ideas, 145 EXIST awards, about 25 companies founded a year, and €75 million pulled into founding and transfer projects. If you are a student, alumnus, or researcher with a half-formed spinout, that is the first adult call. The Dresden program hub is the short list; their office hours are where the EXIST file actually gets written.
boOst Startup Factory is the regional overlay: ten universities across Dresden, Leipzig, Jena, Chemnitz, Mittweida, and Freiberg, and a claimed 120,000 students in the pipeline. Use it when you need a co-founder or a later-stage industry circle, and you can already name the customer. GründerGarten e.V. has run Stammtisch and workshops since 2013 without presenting itself as a federal program. Silicon Saxony is the deep-tech trade body. Staffbase sits in the membership story as the first East German unicorn, and selected startups get the first membership year free. The public counters on that page were broken when we opened it, so the working group is the part of the page that still functions.
How to use Leipzig and Dresden
Germany’s Haus inventory is 310 programs and 318 communities. Leipzig plus Dresden is 12 programs and 14 communities, which you can open as Leipzig programs, Leipzig communities, Dresden programs, and Dresden communities. That is enough to build in if your bottleneck is lab access, EXIST paperwork, or a Saxony customer. It is a thin stack if your bottleneck is late-night networking rather than lab time. Berlin still carries most of the national narrative.
A clean rule is to live where the equipment is. Keep a Berlin week when you need investors or operators. If you move East without a lab, a buyer, or a grant file, you will find a quieter calendar and the same unsolved customer. Read SpinLab, SMILE, medical:forge, or dresden|exists first, then decide whether the train ticket is a commute or a relocation. The listing density is small enough that you can do that in an afternoon.
