NRW beyond Cologne: Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Essen, Aachen
North Rhine-Westphalia is larger than Cologne. On the August 2026 Haus dump, Düsseldorf has 9 programs and 11 communities, Dortmund 5 and 4, Essen 2 and 5, and Aachen 2 programs and 6 communities, against Cologne’s 20 communities and only two program cards. The useful split is industrial: Rhine matchmaking in Düsseldorf, logistics in Dortmund, deep tech and hydrogen in Essen, and university hardware in Aachen. Pick the city that already has your buyer or lab.
Düsseldorf’s clock and scale-up room
digihub Düsseldorf / Rheinland is a DWNRW hub. Its own homepage still advertises Ignition as a five-month accelerator with a €25,000 program value and 0% equity. The dedicated ignitiondus.de page, opened the same week, calls the current GreenTech batch eight months, the same €25,000 without shares, and an apply-by of 31 August. Treat that split as a reason to confirm the live cycle before you block the calendar. The two pages can describe the same brand and still disagree on length.
Scale-up.NRW sits on the same Rhine stack and is clear about the job: 1:1 lead mentors, investor intros, help entering other markets, and peer rooms. The homepage we opened does not print duration, cost, or an equity take. The offering is built for teams that are already scaling. If you still need product-market fit, wait until you have a customer story those mentors can use.
Dortmund logistics and Essen factory bets
Digital Hub Logistics Dortmund is a de:hub with Fraunhofer IML / ISST and TU Dortmund in the next building. The official site sells start-ins, coworking, and a maker process, and it does not publish a stipend. DOaccelerate, run by the city’s economic development agency, is the sharper calendar: 2026 is for international intralogistics scale-ups, apply by 28 February 2026, two mandatory kickoff days in Dortmund on 14-15 April, then online coaching through 13 July. You need a product that already sells at home.
BRYCK is a Startup Factory pitch from the Ruhr, with RAG-Stiftung, University Alliance Ruhr, Initiativkreis Ruhr, and BMWE selection on the page. Targets through 2030 are 1,000 spinoffs and €1bn raised. Open-call terms are not on the homepage. H2UB, also in Essen, calls itself a hydrogen open-innovation platform with an “H2 Start-up Accelerator.” Mentoring and corporate access are listed. Duration and equity are not published, so do not assume a cheque that is not on the page.
Aachen’s RWTH gravity
digitalHUB Aachen still publishes the useful factory facts: a 4-month incubator aimed at product-market fit, digitalCHURCH coworking, EDIH Rhineland and RWTH access, and a lot of the coaching on Zoom. The English incubator page we opened is stale on batches. The last public note was batch 8 starting June 2024. Use the room, and do not treat the 2024 Demo Day as a current deadline.
The Aachen community list on Haus is the rest of the week: Collective Incubator, AC.E, Founders Roundtable, and collæb. The city is a university town with hardware labs and digitalCHURCH coworking. If your bottleneck is industrial customers in the Ruhr or a lab at RWTH, staying is usually cheaper than a move. Confirm the next meeting before you treat any of those names as a weekly habit.
