Stuttgart and Karlsruhe for deep tech
Stuttgart and Karlsruhe are the industrial-research pair. Haus lists 10 programs and 11 communities in Stuttgart, and 9 programs and 8 communities in Karlsruhe. STARTUP AUTOBAHN is a twice-yearly corporate pilot machine. German Accelerator, headquartered in the Stuttgart listing, sells funded international expansion and takes no equity. KIT-Gründerschmiede is the free first door for KIT people. Come for buyers, labs, and EXIST paperwork.
Two cities, one industrial corridor
Munich holds most of the deep-tech brand. This corridor holds the plants and the institutes. Stuttgart is OEMs, suppliers, and ARENA2036. Karlsruhe is KIT, CyberForum and CyberLab, and a student club that has been shipping founders for a long time. Together they are smaller than Berlin (37 programs / 54 communities) and still large enough that you can spend a year in the wrong room.
Pick the city by the bottleneck. If you need a production pilot or a mobility buyer, start in Stuttgart. If you need a research spinout path, patents, or a student cofounder who already lives on Kaiserstraße, start in Karlsruhe. Plenty of teams do both as a weekly rail habit. The two cities sit close enough that you can use both in the same month.
STARTUP AUTOBAHN and German Accelerator
STARTUP AUTOBAHN, powered by Plug and Play, says it has “moved beyond acceleration.” Two programs run each year. You upload a deck, you may get a Deep Dive with a partner, you may get voted in, and then you run a pilot toward a production-ready implementation. Founding partners on the page include Mercedes-Benz, Plug and Play, University of Stuttgart, and ARENA2036, and EXPO is the show. The official site does not publish an equity take or a stipend. You are trading time and IP-adjacent closeness for a named corporate counterpart, which is closer to a sales cycle than to a generalist batch.
German Accelerator is the other Stuttgart-tagged machine: Kickstart, Market Discovery, Market Access, “fully funded, no equity taken,” and about four months if you run the comparison they print. The job is expansion into the US, Asia, LatAm, Africa, or Europe, rather than a seed round. If you do not have a company that can take a mentor meeting in English next month, you are early. If you do, this is one of the cleaner 0% offers in the directory.
KIT-adjacent rooms in Karlsruhe
KIT-Gründerschmiede starts with a first consultation, then a seven-step path from Orientierung to Finanzierung. They claim 250 founding projects in 2025, 50 patents a year, and 800 Beratungsgespräche; those are their numbers. They sit in EXIST Startup Factory NXTGN, which Haus also lists as a Stuttgart incubator. This is where you write the EXIST file. The first step is a consultation, and the later steps are the grant paperwork.
CyberLab is the IT, AI, security, and smart-production space on the Hoepfner site: coworking, mentors, and an accelerator the homepage does not specify by weeks or equity. PionierGarage is the student community, with a weekly Thursday meeting and the GROW competition, and no idea is required to join. Impact Hub Karlsruhe is coworking and a Genossenschaft, without a published cohort. ZEISS Innovation Hub @ KIT is on the Haus incubator list; we do not invent terms we did not read off a live page. AXEL is listed as an energy accelerator, and the official site timed out from here, so treat the card as a pointer rather than a spec.
